Artist’s Statement

“I am interested in texture, color, layering of paint and the interaction of shapes from architectural and real life objects and the negative space that is created. I have always been inspired by the Chair as an object to start from because of its human characteristics.

Several years ago I was in a cabaret in the early morning hours after a performance. Everyone had left for the night. I found myself moved by the way the cane chairs were turned and set a certain way, conveying that a crowd of people had just been there interacting with each other—suddenly, they were gone and all that was left was a sense of their ‘presence’ in the chairs. The yellow ethereal light heightened this sensation. I sat down and started drawing the spaces and negative spaces in front of me. I began a series of paintings from them.

Over time some of these series had moved towards total abstraction: removing shapes; combining shapes; adding the new shapes back onto the space. Hints of the Chair move their way back into the picture space. I am fascinated by the shapes, the movement both back and forth and also around the canvas—and sometimes off the canvas, itself. My own temperament at the time of brush work and gesture making is important to creating textures and layering.

Some series of paintings have been darker than others but for now I am in a stage of ‘hope’ and balance in my life which I am trying to express through the colors I am using, many extracted from the seaside where I grew up in the summers and many with the images from living in the city today.”
